Title of Program: What They Want: A Multi-generational View of Legal Career and Success
Description of Program: While the legal profession and law firms are changing in some ways too slowly and in other ways too fast, we may need to challenge our assumptions about what is perceived as individual career success. Moderated by workplace inter-generational expert and long-time law firm business development consultant/coach Phyllis Weiss Haserot, you will get a cross-generational view from a panel of Boomer, Gen X and Gen Y/Millennial practicing and aspiring women lawyers as well as from a former corporate lawyer, now legal recruiter. They will provide insights on: Do the different generations have a different vision of a successful career? Do they anticipate a series of careers? What has to change in firms to capitalize on the assets each generation brings and retain desirable talent? Are the definitions of success the same for women and men within each generation? What intergenerational challenges must law firms solve in order to sustain their productivity, reputation and attraction to all generations?

The panel includes several members of a unique networking group who are located across the United States/Canada and originally met at a corporate women’s retreat. Years later, these women continue to meet in-person twice a year to discuss business issues and work experiences, to brainstorm, problem solve, give and receive feedback and to mentor each other (yes, even the most senior women lawyers need mentors). This dynamic group also actively refers business to each other. Moderated by The Careerist, Vivia Chen, this promises to be an insightful discussion on the ways we can help each other succeed.

Outstanding client service ensures repeat business, opportunities for cross-selling and new client referrals. So what is outstanding client service and are you delivering outstanding service consistently to all of your clients? Client service is what distinguishes top practitioners and firms. Clients and potential clients seek attorneys at all levels of experience who not only deliver cutting-edge legal advice, but who provide an outstanding work experience. WILEF’s panel of practitioners, who have distinguished themselves in providing exceptional client service, will address such topics as best-practices for client service, creating a client-service culture, soliciting client feedback and managing client expectations. They will also discuss their own experiences and the challenges of taking client service to the next level. Internal service (to firm partners and associates) is as important as external service to clients, so we will also explore techniques used by successful rainmakers for building outstanding relationships within a firm.
